THE HAROLD
Learn the original long-form improv structure created in Chicago.
The Harold is one of the most influential long-form improv formats ever created - an organic structure developed in Chicago that teaches improvisers how to build rich, interconnected worlds from a single suggestion. In this 4-week class, you’ll learn how the Harold works from the inside out: not as a rigid formula, but as a flexible framework for discovering patterns, themes, and relationships as they emerge in real time.
You’ll focus on:
-
The core structure of the Harold and how it naturally unfolds
-
Initiating strong scenes and heightening through repetition and variation
-
Group games as a way to explore ideas
-
Making connections between scenes
-
Trusting the ensemble and letting the structure do the work
Through guided Harolds, side coaching, and focused exercises, you’ll develop the skills needed to listen deeply, recognize patterns, and play with confidence inside a long-form format. This class is ideal for improvisers who want to deepen their understanding of long-form, strengthen ensemble awareness, and learn a format that has shaped generations of Chicago-trained performers.
*Previous long-form improv experience needed.

FREE-FORM IMPROV
Learn the flexible improv approach that blends the depth of long-form with the immediacy of short-form.
Free-Form is a hybrid format designed for improvisers who want the best of both worlds: the rich, evolving worlds of long-form and the clarity, pace, and playfulness of short-form. Instead of following a single rigid structure, Free-Form teaches you how to move fluidly between quick games, grounded scenes, thematic exploration, and ensemble discovery - all from a single suggestion. You’ll learn how to let the show breathe, expand, contract, and surprise you in real time.
You’ll focus on:
-
Shifting smoothly between short beats and longer scenes
-
Using games, edits, and patterns to inspire new directions
-
Building connections without forcing structure
-
Finding rhythm, pacing, and variety within a set
-
Listening as an ensemble and supporting spontaneous transitions
-
Trusting instinct while maintaining clarity for the audience
This class is ideal for improvisers who enjoy both short-form and long-form, and want to learn how to combine them into a cohesive, dynamic performance style.
*Previous improv experience in both long-form and short-form required.
